BS EN 10284:2000 - Malleable cast iron fittings with compression ends for polyethylene (PE) piping systems

1 Scope
This standard specilies the requirements tor the design, perlormance and lesting of ftings made of malleable cast iron (see also clause 5 Materials) with compression ends ftor polyethylene piping systems. It applies to piping systems in polyothylene (PE) materlals for diferent aplication fiolds, such as water and gas supply, water distribution, irigation and gaseous fuel systems. The malleable cast iron fitings specified in this standard are of compression end type for the connection of PE pipes or of transition type with combined compression ends for pipes in different materials or with combined compression and threaded ends in conformance with prEN 10226-1. Their range of sizes covers nominal outside diameters of PE pipes d 16 to d 125 mm and pipe thread sizes 1/2 to 4.
2 Normative references
This European standard incorporates by dated or undated reference, provwisions from other publications. These normative relerences are cited at the appropriate places in the text and the publications are listed hereatfter. For dated references, subsequent amendments to or revisions of any of publications apply to this European standard only when incorporated in it by amendment or revision. For undated references the latest edition of the publication referred to applies.
3 Types of iltings
For types of ftings, see typical examples of design in Annex A (intomalive).
4 Definitions
For the purpose of this standard the fllowingn definitions apply.
connecting piece for pipes
transition ftting
a fting jointing dfferent types of pipe andor comprising dfferent types of outlet
fitting size
size designation of the nominal outside diametr, dhr. of the connecting PE pipe or of the size of the jointing thread
end of a fiting which connects with a pipe by compresson or with a threaded pliping component
two principal axially aligned outlets of a tee
side outlet of a tee
compression end
an end of a fting in which the joint is made by the compression of a ring or sleeve on the wall of the pipe to provide for pressure integrity. leakightness and resistance to end loads
supporting sleeve (insert stiffener)
cylindrical ring providing a permanent support for the pipe to prevent creep in the pipe wall under radial compressive forces
grip ring
ring that holds the pipes in place and prevents pul out from the joint
In some cases. the supporting sleeve at the same time constutes a grip ring.
minimum bore
smallest internal diamter measured at any cross soction of the assemblod ftting
jointing thread
thread complying with prEN 10226-1 or prEN 10226-2
fastenlng thread
thread complying with ISO 228-1:1994
component test
test to verity the performance of a fting carried out on the fiting with or without the intemal parts
jointing test
test to verily the finess for purpose of an assembled joint, includling the fiting with the connecting pipes
